Natural Medicine

Ayurveda is a natural system of medicine. It originated in India more than 5,000 years ago. The term Ayurveda translates to knowledge of life. It’s a concept that disease is due to an imbalance or stress in your consciousness. Ayurveda encourages lifestyle interventions and natural therapies to regain a balance between the body, mind, spirit, and the environment.

Many factors, both internal and external, might disturb our balance. Examples of these stressors include your emotional state, diet and food choices, seasons and weather, and family relationships. Balance and health are the natural order. However, disorder manifests as disease.

Three Principle Energies

Ayurveda identifies three basic types of energy. Also known as functional principles, these are present in everyone and everything. Our three types of energy are vata, pitta and kapha. These principles can be related to the basic biology of the body. They are also used in reference to seasons.

To begin practicing Ayurveda, this is a wonderful guide to understanding your energy.

Energy is required to create movement , enabling the body to function. Energy is also required to metabolize the nutrients, and maintain the structure of the cell. All people have the qualities of vata, pitta and kapha, but one usually dominates the others. Learning more about your primary energy allows you to really find that harmonious balance.

Manage Stress

Chronic stress is like fuel for disease. How often have you noticed the onset of a medical condition appearing around stressful life events? Stress is not always unavoidable. You know that too much stress is harmful and can compromise your health. That mind-body-spirit balance will be completely thrown off when you are unable to manage stress.

What are you suppose to do when life keeps throwing things at you? I know you can’t just walk away from everything. Your family, your job, it’s a bit overwhelming at times. Practicing meditation or yoga, getting out into nature and a number of Ayurvedic herbs can help you better manage that stress.

Balance Your Nutrition

Every day I think about eating with balance in mind. First of all, nobody wants to eat kale morning, noon and night. Second, stop avoiding healthy oils and fats because fat is bad for you. The good old 80/20 rule works beautifully when you try to balance your nutrition.

Eat foods that give your body energy. However, eat and drink things that make you happy. If you want a donut with coffee in the morning, eat it. Then, the next time you go grocery shopping, spend more time in the produce section. The goal here is balance right. You can take care of yourself, and develop a love for actually doing the work.
