Spring has begun and there is an abundance of beauty all around. You start to plan outdoor adventures with the weather beginning to warm. Historically spring is the season for rebirth. As you prepare to spring clean your home, let’s talk about revitalizing your beauty routine.
Whether it’s tossing your old (probably VERY old) skin care products, cleaning your make up brushes or venturing out and trying new things, your beauty routine will thank you. These simple steps to revitalize your beauty routine this spring will have you blossoming.
Discard Old Products
I know you don’t want to part with your favorite lipstick that has been worn down to a nub over the past 10 years. It’s discontinued, and you hate to imagine life without it. If you do a quick check of any woman’s bathroom, chances are you’ll find tubes of rarely used potions, a few well loved powder blushes and a number of other products they didn’t know existed. We want to get every penny out of the precious dollars we spend on our skin care and cosmetics, but hoarding isn’t good for you either.
Beauty products go bad. At best, they no longer perform as well as they used to; at worst, they can cause irritations or even infections. There are no regulations or requirements under current United States law that require cosmetic manufacturers to print expiration dates on the labels of cosmetic products.
Manufacturers are responsible for issuing shelf life dates, but the FDA does not mandate it. This means, consumers never really know how old their stuff is, or when they should toss it.
Below are recommendations for tossing the items in your beauty arsenal.
Beauty Item | Length of Stay |
---|---|
Powders, blushes, eye shadows | 1-2 years |
Cleansers, moisturizers, serums | 1 year |
Liquid foundation, concealer | 1 year |
Lip products | 1-2 years |
Brow products | 2 years |
Eye liner, mascara | 3-6 months |
Nail polishes | 2 years |
Perfumes, fragrances | 10 years |
Revitalize Your New Stuff
When you open a product, air hits and ingredients start to oxidize and degrade. Furthermore, every time you touch your makeup or skin-care potions, you transfer germs to them. Heat and humidity in your bathroom also promote the growth of mold and yeast. While moving all of your skin care, hair care, cosmetics, nail products, etc to the closet would be best, it’s terribly impractical. Beauty fridges are all the rage right now.
Truly clean, natural products are free of fillers and preservatives to aid in shelf stability. This means they are better for your skin and overall health. However, they will spoil more quickly and last longer when kept under refrigeration. Putting your natural products in the fridge can help keep them fresh while shielding them from damaging sunlight or steam from your bathroom.
Detox Your Skin
With winter dryness and environmental stressors, a facial detox is the best answer. Detoxes are trending right now, and why not do one for the biggest organ in your body? One of the best steps to revitalize your beauty routine is to dedicate one week to removing all impurities, toxins, pollutants and dead skin cells.
Start a detox by getting a facial. A proper facial can clean out your pores more thoroughly than your normal skin care routine. If you aren’t ready to get out to a dermatologist or an aesthetician yet, you can perform your own spa-level facial at home.
Detoxify With Natural Products
A detox involves removing toxins, reducing inflammation and rebuilding the layers of your skin. Now’s the perfect time to start implementing a skin care routine with cleaner, more natural products. Clean your pores with items containing vegan retinol, witch hazel, AHA and BHA. Combat the winter dryness with oils and hyaluronic acid. As you head outdoors more frequently in the spring weather, tackle environmental stressors with products containing vitamin C and mineral SPF’s.
Revitalize From The Inside
There’s no magic food that will keep us looking forever young. However, diet and lifestyle does affect how your skin looks and ages. Use this season of rebirth to start cleaning your nutrition. When you take care of the inside, it shows on the outside. For a total hair, nail and skin rejuvenation, it’s important to look at your nutrition.
Begin by limiting inflammatory foods like dairy, sugar, fried foods, coffee and alcohol. Opt for lots of fruits and veggies, healthy fats and protein. Drink a lot of water. Staying hydrated eliminates toxins and plumps all of those glowing skin cells.
Skin, hair and nails are mostly protein. Increasing protein, especially collagen, wards off wrinkles and provides strength and elasticity. Multiple adaptogens and super foods have been known to enhance and nourish your skin. The super food mix Forever Beautiful contains chia seeds which maintain collagen, blueberries to protect skin cells from free radicals and acerola cherry full of Vitamin C.

Give Something New A Whirl
The unknown is scary. Put oils on my face, what? Herbs? That sounds ridiculous. Some people think it’s ridiculous to use natural products. They think they’re less effective or a complete waste of time and money. When your skin or hair gets used to using chemical ingredients, it can be hard to wean yourself off of them.
The rebalancing of your skin’s acid/base balance can manifest as breakouts, dryness, redness, etc. This however, does not mean the new ingredients aren’t working, it means your skin is healing. If you really want to revitalize your beauty routine, you need to try new products.
Start small and start slow
If you’ve been using harsh chemicals like retinols, or benzoyl peroxides, wean yourself off slowly. Decrease the amount of usage over a few weeks. Help your skin’s acid adjust gradually. Don’t swap all of your products at once. If you’re switching to natural cosmetics, hair or skincare, stat with an eye shadow palette, styling products and a cleanser. You don’t want to shock your system with too much at one time.
Simultaneously, help your body cleanse by engaging in exercise and if you can, visit a sauna to sweat it out. It might not seem like an attractive option, but consider going lighter on your makeup while you make a transition. Use a mud mask to encourage impurities to leave the skin. In the end, have fun with it. Revitalize your beauty routine one step at a time. New beauty products are like new shoes. It’s a little bit scary, but hopeful and exciting.
